Rewards income, 2025–2026$897 · 0.270 ETH
10.00 ETH, Jan 1, 2025 to Jan 1, 2026 · scenario path
0.2700 ETH of rewards, $897 of income when received
Each reward is valued at that day's CAD price. Those rewards are worth $1,134 at the end; meanwhile the 10.00 ETH you staked went from $40,000 to $42,000.

What is driving this result
- You owe tax on the CAD value on the day each reward arrives, even if the price later falls. Here the rewards are worth $237 more now than when you were taxed on them; selling them then gives a capital gain.
- Commission of 10% turns a 3.00% reward rate into 2.70%.
- Unstaking takes about 7 days on Ethereum (validator). On this path the worst 7-day fall was −9.8%: that is the risk of not being able to sell during the wait.
- Validators can be slashed for provable misbehaviour; being offline costs inactivity penalties.
What it takes for staking to pay
Each line changes one assumption and holds the others fixed.
- Price
- A fall of more than 2.6% in ETH over the period leaves you with less CAD value than you started with, rewards included.
- After tax
- Income tax of about $269 is due on rewards worth $1,134 today; keep cash for it, since selling the rewards may be a loss.

Ethereum (validator): how staking works, from the network's documentation
- Exit
- No fixed period: a validator joins an exit queue whose length depends on how many others are leaving, then waits for the withdrawal sweep (at most 16 withdrawals per block). Enter the wait you expect; 7 days is a placeholder, not a quote.
- Payouts
- Rewards accrue every epoch (about 6.4 minutes); credited daily here.
- Compounding
- 0x01 validators: the balance above 32 ETH is swept out every few days (no compounding). 0x02 validators compound up to 2,048 ETH.
- Minimum
- 32 ETH per validator
- Slashing
- Validators can be slashed for provable misbehaviour; being offline costs inactivity penalties.
